Love Thy Synth
By Hannah Silva
5 episode series for BBC Radio 3
Pygmalion and Narcissus intertwine in this 21st century story of human relationships and loneliness, of our need for external validation and the search for self. “The relationship between humans and their artificial counterparts runs right back to the myths of ancient Greece, where Pygmalion’s statue was brought to life with a kiss. It is the stuff of legend and of science fiction – part of our written history and a part of our imagined future.” Dr Kate Devlin.
Hannah Silva’s future-set story of a woman’s search for connection is told through the podcasts she and her synthetic robodoll make together.
2040: NIKKI KING is a cyber journalist and podcast maker. She is given exclusive access by reclusive, mysterious robotics expert and artist TIRESIAS to record his latest work. Nikki unexpectedly receives a synth doll made for her by Tiresias in her exact image and with her exact voice. The doll has mischievously and mysteriously been named “Knickers” by Tiresias. This was the name Nikki was taunted with at school. The relationship she then develops with the doll, at first reluctantly and then willingly, will bring her face to face with the darkest parts of herself.
